A normal day at work-not always. As a vet tech, I do know that most days are typical but there are some days when the unexpected happens. Emergencies: hit by car, ate chocolate, bloody diarrhea, seizures, stepped on the puppy, allergic reations, ate fertilizer, ate a rat, lethargic, and the list continues. there are days when a client comes in with a dog you have seen beat the odds but then has to be put to sleep. I have cried with several clients in the past two years. I have had to bag their lifeless bodies.

then there are not so good clients. I have seen a dr put to sleep a dog simply because it was diabetic and they did not want to give it a shot of insulin a day-and they did not want to sign over the dog because they did not want anyone else to have him. I have seen a client bring in a dog they owned for 8 years and wanted it euthanized because the dog bit his owner (after the OWNER bit the dogs ear!) the dog was signed over and a good friend that I worked with in Johnson City took her and she is one of the sweetest dogs I know. I have had a person come it with a dog that had fleas so bad the pomeranian had no hair left. the dog was a giant scab with hundreds of fleas crawling on it-and you could see it from a distance. the dog had whip worms, tape worms, round worms, and hook worms. he was barely alive because the owner could not simply put flea prevention on and worm the dog. that client had no money and begged that I fix her dog. I am not allowed to do something an owner cant pay for. that lady told me that I hated her dog and that I could care less about it. little did she know I snuck the dog dewormer and flea prevention. she also refused to sign her dog over.

Then we must not forget why we do the job. All the cute puppies and kittens? Not really. But because God does work miracles in these little creatures. I love educating clients and making sure that they know exactly how to take care of their animal. it is amazing the people who think that you just feed and water it and that is it. there are days when an animal pulls through a serious surgery, when there are times that a hit by car dog makes a full recovery even though its eye balls were popped out of socket when it arrived. And then there was a day like March 30th.

A typical day. Two surgeries, appointments, and taking care of the dogs who are boarding. I had just finished kennels while the dr and another tech was finishing surgery. I came up as she was suturing the cat up about to recover it from surgery. I came to recover the cat who was getting spayed. when I walked in the surgery room they told me that the cat was pregnant, and the owners wanted to go ahead and spay the cat (this does happen every now and then). I looked and saw this lifeless tiny body laying on the table, it had been there quite a while. as I was just looking at it, its little rib cage caved in and the lifeless creature took a breath. it was unknown how far a long the cat was in her pregnancy, but the kitten looked premature. two minutes later the kitten took another breath, about to die. I told the dr if we could save it, I would take it home. the other tech clamped the tiny umbilical cord, cut it and dr sutured it. I took the kitten in a small towel and began vigorously rubbing its whole body to stimulate breathing. then I got a small pippete and sucked fluid out of the tiny nostrils and down his mouth. the dr said it was very unlikely that he will make it.

one hour later after rubbing and removing fluids from his mouth and nostrils....the kitten was breathing every few seconds. and then, finally the reassuring first tiny meow.

and now we begin the journey. feedings every two hours, constant heating pad, and stimulation so the kitten will urinate and defecate.

God has reveled some amazing things to my husband and I in the past week...that is a whole another blog, but I must say this. I have learned that nothing matters but doing work for God and doing His will. what people think of me, how horrible some days may be, all the debt we are in, it doesn't matter. only God matters.

  1. Good blog Amy! It made me sad that someone would want to put their dog to sleep cause the dog is diabetic. :( People can be so cruel. And that little kitten your helpin' is so adorable! I wish I could come by and see the kitten. :)
